The purpose of the applied academics is twofold. One is to
continue to build skills for college, since more than 90%
of our students go on to further their education. The other
is to build skills for life, connecting skills for the "real
world" to everything that is happening in the classroom. The
question "Why am I learning this?" finds its answer in our
focus on connecting academics to both college and the world
beyond. Rekindling the love of learning is the thread that
ties together all courses in the program.
Courses offered are as follows, including many unlisted selections
that are crafted to serve individual interests and needs:
A focus on building writing and reading skills in small classes.
Creative writing. Literature. Lots of group discussion.
Government and Economics. The development of real-life economic
skills, such as resume writing, interviewing skills, techniques
for securing a high-powered internship and others are emphasized.
Focuses on key issues facing the planet, with a focus on the
power of the individual to make a difference. Research and
presentation skills.
Not a repetition of the the high school curriculum. Time management,
organizational skills and stress management skills that reduce
the pressures of college.
