Parents of Walkabout students tell
us that their children grew to be more mature, responsible
young adults while at the program. They tell us also that
their children's attitude about and performance in school
improved during their year with us. For many parents, Walkabout
was an important step in their child's journey into adulthood.
Morgan Tanner; Carmel High School
The Walkabout program worked for our daughter, Morgan, although
I am at something of a loss to explain exactly how. I know
that they challenge the students to accept responsibility
for their own lives, teach time-management skills, focus on
writing and community-service, and encourage teamwork. But
even with that said, there seems to be something else operative
in the dynamics of this curriculum. A special relationship
and deep bonding occurs in this tiny school.

Micah Forlani, Somers High School
Micah flourished at Walkabout. We watched our daughter grow
into a strong, happy, and confident young woman. She looked
forward to school. Her writing, including vocabulary and spelling,
grew by leaps and bounds, and finally she began to participate
in class, knowing what she had to offer was insightful. Walkabout
renewed Micah's vision of life and gave it wings.
"Micah flourished at Walkabout. We watched
our daughter grow into a strong, happy, and confident young
woman."
Bill Rodriguez; Valhalla High School
The experience has been very positive for our son Bill, who
continually expresses how excited he is about the learning
environment that exists at Walkabout. The experience has been
very valuable in helping Billy prepare for the realities of
college, life and to succeed. Bill's creative writing and
the quantity he is reading has improved greatly this year,
and at the same time he is enjoying it more. Further proof
of Walkabout's impact are his SAT scores, which climbed 120
points this year.
"The experience has been very valuable
in helping Billy prepare for the realities of college, life
and to succeed."
Shayna Dulberger; Mahopac High School
During our daughter's time at Walkabout, we have watched
her grow and mature at an astonishing rate. She has become
a confident, competent young woman who is highly motivated
to set high expectations for herself, develop actionable plans,
and execute them. Shayna's attitude toward school and learning
have improved dramatically. She is committed to doing her
work and appreciates the higher-quality products that have
resulted. At Walkabout she has learned discipline and patience,
carefully revising and editing drafts to produce final products
of higher quality than in the past.
"Shayna's attitude toward school and
learning have improved dramatically."
Will Kelly; Hendrick Hudson High School
The diversity of teaching and experiences at Walkabout is
just what Will needed to jump-start him this year. His community
service project at WESPAC resulted in his being published
in their newsletter, but, more importantly, his learning became
the basis for conversations about politics, the environment,
and morality that would have been impossible last year. He
has learned time-management and work priorities for his schoolwork
that he never had before. Our son is writing and reading for
pleasure again.
