Service Learning Projects
At Walkabout, students spend a month in the community making a difference through a project that earns them social studies and English credit.

Dan Sokal Dan Sokal
Yorktown High School

My community-service project with the Museum of Modern Art taught me the job skills I'll need to work at a large institution. I learned how to communicate and work professionally with adults from a variety of backgrounds. The project prepared me for my internships with two art galleries. I realized there is much more to the business world than paperwork; it involves personal relationships and understanding people's needs.

Dan Sokal
Dan learned about three related businesses during his internship at HERE, a NYC
art gallery, theater, and cafe.

Will Kelly Will Kelly
Hendrick Hudson High School

During my community service project at WESPAC I was able to voice my opinions on a variety of political topics. I learned the inner workings of an activist group, and how to organize protests, make mailings, and lobby using the telephone and pamphlets.

This year I have found the direction that I had lost during the last few years. Walkabout has given me the independence and creative freedom I needed to progress as a student, and as a member of society.

"This year I have found the direction that I had lost during the last few years."

Will Kelly
During his career internship, Will learned sound recording and electronics at TMF
Recording Studio in the East Village in New York.

Topher De Felice Topher De Felice
Horace Greeley High School

Walkabout Walkabout has given me the confidence to conquer the workplace. During my community service project at Tea Town Lakes Nature Preserve, my trail crew and I were able to put the trail system back into function months before schedule after Hurricane Floyd practically wiped out the whole park.

The environmental science class has enlightened me about the complexity of the earth. I learned about the enormous pollution that the human race spits into the earth's atmosphere and other ways we damage the planet. The class taught me easy ways to prevent the destruction of earth. Now, I am able to speak with confidence about environmental issues I feel strongly about.

"The environmental science class has enlightened me about the complexity of the earth."

Topher De Felice
Topher explored his interest in the natural world in both his service learning project and his environmental science class.
