You'd really have to know me to understand how much I've grown and benefited from the Walkabout Program. Because of the trusting environment that Walkabout offers, I was able to explore my interests in a hands-on fashion. This kind of independence taught me to accomplish things for myself, and not only because I was being "required" to, but because I wanted to do the work for myself. Walkabout's positive atmosphere, where my ideas were invited, taught me that I was a capable individual whose effort counted.

Because of the diversity in the Walkabout community, I've been exposed to new types of people, new opinions and new ideas. Next year, I'll be even more open- minded in college than I would have been. My communication skills have become much better. As a result of being part of this diversity, I've realized the importance of communication and mutual respect. That insight into people is going to be valuable to me for the rest of my life.

During his long-distance internship with the Adirondack Mt. Club, Chase explored the
outdoor education/recreation profession.

Fox Lane High School

Coming to Walkabout was the best decision I could have ever made for myself. Instead of being in a class where students are not really interested in what they are learning, the students here at Walkabout are very involved in every class. The class discussions are interesting because every student has something to give to the class.

The atmosphere at Walkabout is very warm and motivating. Each teacher has been there for me and has wanted me to do well. The teachers are very involved with the students and love teaching us as much as learning from us.

"The students here at Walkabout are very involved in every class."

Ailee O'Neil

Paraday Pictures in New York.
