Walden and Pines Bridge Students Star in Annual Talent Show

June 05, 2018

Students from the Walden and Pines Bridge schools danced, sang and even swam away from a “hungry shark” in the annual Talent Show, held June 1 at the Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES campus in Yorktown.
Families, friends and staff, who packed the Walden Gym, cheered and clapped as the students starred in individual and group acts.  Several students sang songs or lip-synched to popular songs while dancing.
As the song “Baby Shark" played, Justin Delgado’s class acted out the lyrics to the catchy children’s tune about a family of sharks and the little fish that swim away from them.  In the middle of the act, Delgado – dressed in a full shark costume – jumped onto the stage to his students’ and the audience’s delight.
Students from Michelle Gonzalez-Delgado’s class danced to a Pokemon song while students from Kristen Morris’s class – dressed in T-shirts decorated with greetings in different languages – sang the “Hello” song. Melissa Bayeur’s class, meanwhile, sang “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
Now in its eleventh year, the Talent Show was started by art teaching assistant Debra Canzio, who each year plans and runs it. Art teacher Jesse Steiner contributes props and classroom staff help their students select and rehearse their acts.
“Debra had the idea 11 years ago and has taken it beyond what anyone imagined,” Steiner said. “It’s become an institution in our school.” Students start asking about the Talent Show in the fall, Steiner said, and Canzio spends months organizing it and ensuring that any student who wants to participate gets the chance.
For Canzio, the Talent Show is a labor of love.
“It really is an opportunity for them to shine on stage and show who they are,” she said. “I love to see the kids succeed and feel good about themselves. When they are up there on the stage, I just see their lights shine – they’re beaming with pride. That’s why I love to do it.”
