Culinary Juniors Cater to Seniors at BOCES Luncheon

May 03, 2018

They worked hard, cooking, baking and learning all the ins and outs of the Hospitality industry. So when the senior high school students in the Hospitality Academy of Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES were honored with a luncheon on campus, the juniors in the program were happy to provide the festivities for their older counterparts.
In a time-honored tradition, juniors cooked, baked, prepared and served the spring luncheon to the senior students, who brought along distinguished guests, teachers, counselors and administrators from their home districts.
Students and staff from Carmel, Mahopac, Fox Lane, Walter Panas, Hendrick Hudson, Peekskill, Lakeland, Yorktown, Somers, Ossining and Brewster high schools enjoyed the luncheon, as seniors Emily Betancourt (Fox Lane) and Rachel Tomassetti (Brewster) spoke about their time at The Tech Center and the wonderful opportunities given to them by the Culinary Arts program.
“I loved the environment at the Hospitality Academy. I learned so much, and I really appreciated the fact that we got to do what we love to do,” said Betancourt.
Tomassetti said, “I was able to take so much away from this experience, including the importance of a strong work ethic, techniques of baking and cooking, and working together.”
Students Alexandria and Elizabeth Carneiro, Doriano Carrasquillo (Mahopac), Nicholas Merando and Jevod Mulligan (Walter Panas) were also honored for scholarships they received.
The juniors prepared a feast of Caesar salad, filet mignon, mashed potatoes, sautéed spinach and apple crisp with cinnamon ice cream for dessert.
As Mahopac High School teacher Michael Hunt said, “This is an amazing demonstration of our students’ talents, skills and abilities!”
