Items To Borrow

SNOWSHOES

Thirty pairs of brand new snowshoes are available for a one week period! The snowshoes can be used by all age levels, however, younger students will need assistance in securing the bindings. If your district receives a BOCES mail delivery, the snowshoes will be shipped to your school in large bins. If your district does not, or, if your district is not a part of P/NW BOCES, the snowshoes must be picked up at BOCES. Fee: $3/pair (to cover wear and tear)

Following is a list of VIDEOS AND SLIDESHOW programs which may be borrowed for up to two weeks. If your district receives a BOCES mail delivery, the item will be shipped to you. If your district does not, or if your district is not a part of P/NW BOCES, the item can EITHER be picked up at BOCES or mailed to your school for the cost of mailing.

Dennis Weaver’s Earth Ship
This story takes the watcher through the planning and building of environmentally sustainable house, constructed from old tire and soda cans!

Incredible Suckers
This video focuses on the cephlaphods; chambered nautilus, cuttlefish, octopus, and squid. Shot on locations around the world, biologist and award-winning underwater filmaker Mike deGruy has been studying these fascinating “earth aliens” for over twenty years! Get up close and personal with these little known creatures that have the largest brains of any invertebrate animal. See footage of a giant octopus, a giant squid, and the “Vampire Squid from Hell,” which has never been captured on film before!

Jellies and Other Ocean Drifters
In this 35-minute video narrated by Leonard Nimoy, you will see breathtaking images of delicate jellies trailing long tentacles, predatory comb jellies, web-weaving larvaceans, colonial salps, and 30-foot long siphonophores!

Living Sea
This IMAX video takes viewers to the world’s oceans to explore its mysterious depths! Come face to face with humpback whales, swim with thousands of sea jellies, and witness the bizarre spawning behavior of giant clams. Watch as participants surf in Hawaii and deep sea dive in Palau. Finally, test viewers courage with the Coast Guard in some of the world’s roughest seas and follow a ROV 3,000 feet down through the ocean depths and view creatures living where sunlight never penetrates.

Michael Mish’s Kid’s Eye View of the Environment
This Emmy award winning PBS special explores several key environmental issues. Through song, stories, and humor, Michael Mish will encourage young people and help them discover how they can help!


Reef Fish Identification

Dear Children of the Earth
This slide show, based on the book by Schim Schimmel, is a letter from the earth to the children of the earth appealing for their help. Included is a tape of the letter with gentle background music.

Introduction to Corals
This 125 slide set and teaching guide is designed to familiarize individuals with corals’ natural history and the basic identification skills necessary to begin identifying the nearly two hundred species of stony corals, gorgonians, fire corals, and black corals that inhabit the reefs of Florida and the Caribbean. The slides were taken by Paul Humann.

Introduction to Marine Invertebrates
This 175 slide set and teaching guide is designed to familiarize individuals with the basic knowledge necessary to begin identifying the hundreds of invertebrates that inhabit the reefs of Florida and the Caribbean. The slides were taken by Paul Humann. The teaching guide, which is keyed directly to the slide presentation and the book “Reef Creature Identification”, takes the class through a step-by-step learning process of the ten most important invertebrate phyla and nearly 50 commonly recognized invertebrate groups.

Reef Fish Identification
This 270 slide set and teaching guide covers the hundreds of fish species seen in Florida and the Caribbean. The slides were taken by Paul Humann.
