One of the primary
goals of the BOCES Regional Summer School is to provide academic
support to students who have not been successful in a course of study
during the school year. This support is provided during a 26 day
period and consequently, active participation in the instructional
program on a daily basis is critical for the development of academic
achievement, social competence and to foster the development of
responsibility and self-discipline.

EXCUSED/UNEXCUSED ABSENCE
 |
Excused: an absence, tardiness or departure from class
MAY be excused for the following circumstances: illness,
death-in-family, religious obligations/observance, medical or clinical
appointment which could not be arranged outside of school hours, legal
appointment/court appearance, college visitation or military
obligation. |
 |
Unexcused: an absence, tardiness or departure from
class is unexcused if it does not fall into the above categories.
|
Each absence, tardiness and early
departure from class shall be documented by the school nurse in the
attendance register in a manner consistent with Commissioner’s
Regulations. It is the responsibility of the parents or person in
parental relation to the pupil to notify the office by telephone on
the morning of the absence, tardiness or, early departure from class.
It shall be the student’s responsibility to obtain all make-up work
from his/her teacher immediately upon the student’s return to school
and to provide the nurse with written documentation signed by the
parent or person in parental relation stating the reason for the
absence.

STUDENT
ATTENDANCE/COURSE GRADE
Since the summer
school program is offered during a compressed 26-day period, each day
of instruction is the equivalent of more than two (2) days of
instruction during the regular school year. Therefore, it is
imperative that students be in attendance for every scheduled day of
instruction.
In order for a
student to receive credit for attending the BOCES Regional Summer
School, it is important that the student attend all scheduled class
meetings. Students with four (4) absences will be dropped from the
program and, as a result, receive no credit for the summer school
course of study. Removal from the program due to absences will be
authorized by the summer school principal. An appeal by the student or
his/her parents may be made to the Director of Curriculum, the
Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent and the Putnam Northern
Westchester BOCES Board of Education in that order. |

NOTIFICATION
Notice to the
pupil’s parents or persons in parental relation regarding absences and
the potential for removal from the summer school program and
strategies that shall be employed prior to the pupil being removed for
insufficient attendance shall be as follows:
-
The parent or persons in parental relation to the student shall be
contacted by telephone of each absence.
-
On the second day of absence the teacher shall speak to the student
and notify the principal or his designee in writing who shall then
send a letter home, with a copy to the home school principal,
advising the parents or person in parental relation of the number of
absences.
-
On the third day of absence the teacher shall speak to the student,
notify the principal in writing, who shall then send a second letter
home advising the parents or person in parental relation of the
number of absences. The principal or his designee shall also meet
with the student, the student’s parents or persons in parental
relation.
-
On the fourth day of absence the student shall be removed from the
program and receive no credit for attending the summer school course
of study.

 |
LATENESS TO CLASS
The rationale for
the importance of daily class attendance must also apply to arriving
to class at the scheduled time. Students who are not in class by the
start of each period will be considered as being late. Three (3)
occurrences of lateness are the equivalent of one (1) absence and a
student will be dropped from the summer school program in the manner
described above. |
