When students encounter science concepts in a variety of contexts, their understanding, retention, and appreciation is broadened, deepened, and enriched. Teachers have always recognized the benefits of linking quality literature to children's investigations in science.
RESOURCE GUIDE
A Connecting Literature and Science Resource Guide has been produced for
SCIENCE 21 users. It contains three parts. Part One provides an overview of the benefits of and strategies for connecting literature and science. Part Two includes a thorough, annotated bibliography for books and other resources that are linked to each unit in the SCIENCE 21 program. Part Three contains sample activities for each grade level in which literature and science can be linked in engaging and innovative ways.
SCIENCE 21 READERS
These "Little Books" are summaries of the concepts that students are exposed to in their unit investigations. Written in a lively format with real-life photographs, these readers may be used as a "Read Aloud" after a unit has been completed, for shared reading groups, or for individual student reinforcement and enjoyment. One copy is included in each appropriate SCIENCE 21 kit. Additional copies can be downloaded through the Teacher Resources page or ordered directly from BOCES by clicking here (click here for Spanish version) and printing the order form.
READINGS IN THE CONTENT AREA
Packets of Readings in the Content Area are available for all units in Grades 3 through 6. These are interesting articles for students that summarize and extend some of the concepts that students engaged in during their investigations. Each article is followed by questions that allow teachers to check for comprehension. Teachers use these readings for review and reinforcement, as vehicles to extend activities, for enrichment, or for homework assignments.
SECURING BOOKS CONNECTED TO THE SCIENCE 21 CURRICULUM
Teachers and administrators often ask how they can secure the literature listed in our unit bibliographies and the Literacy Connections Resource Guide. Almost all of the books can be obtained through the Westchester Library System, but many of the titles are also available through independent vendors. For more information on how to secure these books click on the following link: TO ACCESS LITERATURE LINKS TO THE SCIENCE 21 PROGRAM
