Special Education Department

Every child is unique. At Putnam |Northern Westchester BOCES, our staff work to ensure that every child reaches his or her full potential. We do so by providing a full range of programs, services and resources designed to meet each child’s individualized needs, and we do it in a nurturing environment where staff members feel more like family than teachers or therapists.

At our Pines Bridge, Walden and Fox Meadow Schools and our programs in Local School Buildings, Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES provides high quality special education programs and services for students with a wide array of social, emotional, learning and medical needs. Our curriculum is aligned with New York State Common Core learning standards and tailored to meet each child’s individual education plan.

We educate students with spina bifida, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, autism, multiple and severe disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, specific learning disabilities and emotional disabilities. Students are referred to BOCES through their local school district’s Committee on Special Education.

Our schools offer supports including physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, teachers of the deaf, teachers of the visually impaired, psychological counseling, behavior intervention, mobility training, assistive technology and more. These supports are also available on an itinerant basis, allowing school districts to contract with service providers for their own programs.

In many ways, our schools look and sound and feel like ordinary schools, complete with student assemblies, music and art, talent shows, book fairs and physical education class. As a result, when you walk down the hall in one of our schools, you will not only find students learning, you will find them growing, laughing and making friends. In short, you will find them doing the things all kids do.
